Take Action to Protect Victims of Domestic Violence

1 in every 5 homicides of women in Michigan involves a current or former intimate partner with a firearm.

In order to protect victims of domestic violence and prevent gun violence Michigan lawmakers must pass SBs 471 and 472. These bills will prohibit people with misdemeanor domestic violence convictions from purchasing or owning a firearm for eight years, and will go a long way towards keeping our communities safer.

Dear lawmaker,

I am writing to urge you to support Senate Bills 471 and 472, which address the pressing issue of domestic violence in our community. Taking action to support these bills will help prevent gun violence in Michigan.

The statistics regarding domestic violence in Michigan paint a stark and concerning picture of the urgent need for action. It's alarming to learn that more than 1 in 3 women in Michigan and 1 in 4  of men have experienced intimate partner physical violence, rape, or stalking at some point in their lives. Perhaps even more troubling is that 1 in every 5 homicides of women in Michigan involves a current or former intimate partner with a firearm.

To address this crisis, it is imperative that we support the domestic violence misdemeanor bill. This legislation will prevent individuals with misdemeanor domestic violence convictions from purchasing or owning a firearm or ammunition for eight years. By supporting this bill, we can take a significant step towards reducing domestic violence-related fatalities and creating a safer, more secure future for all Michiganders.
