Tell MI Legislators to Hold Corporate Polluter Enbridge Accountable

Back under Gov. Rick Snyder, his administration and the Republican state legislature worked hand in glove with Canadian fossil fuel giant Enbridge and their corporate allies to try and build a dangerous oil tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac. Now, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel are working to protect the Great Lakes from oil spills and the threats posed by the construction and operation of a tunnel in the Straits, and their work to protect the Great Lakes are seriously threatened by an unaccountable government body called the Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority.

Send a letter to your legislator and tell them to repeal the law passed under Gov. Snyder that created the Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority to give Enbridge a free pass for fossil fuel profits.

Dear lawmaker,

Like many Michiganders, I cherish our Great Lakes way of life and keeping this resource secure for future generations. But for too long, giant corporations have gotten away with polluting our air and water, including the 2010 Kalamazoo River oil spill, which was a tragic example of a corporate polluter—Enbridge—wreaking havoc on our environment with little consequence.

The state of Michigan, under Gov. Rick Snyder, handed Enbridge the ability to construct a new oil tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac by passing Public Act 359. Passed at the eleventh hour in the final days of Snyder’s governorship, the law has since created an unaccountable entity, the Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority, and given them the ability to act as a rubberstamp for fossil fuel giant Enbridge with little public scrutiny.

I urge you to work with your colleagues to repeal PA 359 in order to protect the Great Lakes from catastrophic harms and ensure corporate polluters don’t hold the reins of government.
